Introduction

This Group contains a selective list of links to the World Wide Web (WWW), covering NGOs, organizations and activities devoted solely, or primarily, to work on CBNRM. The page is organized in three parts (that are further subdivided): (A) General, (B) Areas (for the division of areas globally see Category Regions, for the division of sub-regions in Africa see Group Africa), and (C) Topics.

These links are taken from CBNRM Net's log of new CBNRM-related websites and web-pages that appear on the World Wide Web, located Category Logs. In the cases of sites that, for unknown reasons, are password protected, the URLs are included without hyperlink.

  3. The Sustainable Rural Development Information System (SRDIS).   Description: SRDIS, which is part of CIESIN, is cataloging the information on the Internet related to sustainable rural development. SRDIS focuses on two topical areas: (1) natural resource management, and (2) decentralization. The kinds of resources cataloged include: web sites of relevant institutions, case studies, data sources, and print publications
  4. Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM, Homepage)
  5. Participatory Management Clearinghouse (PMC).   Description: A service that facilitates the dissemination of information concerning participatory management of natural resources. It links existing networks/institutions to promote a better flow or rich and diverse experiences, providing a common space to share lessons. Time frame: ?.   1. Biodiversity Support Program (BSP).   Description: BSP promotes biodiversity conservation in many of the world's most biologically divers areas. Through program activities, research and analysis, publications, and this website, BSP shares their knowledge about integrating conservation with social and economic development. Partners: BSP is a consortium of World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and World Resources Institute (WRI). It is funded through a cooperative agreement between WWF, the lead consortium institution, and USAID

A public interest research and advocacy organisation, which promotes environmentally sound and equitable development strategies. 3. Projects, activities

  1. RAISE.   Description: RAISE (Rural and Agricultural Incomes with a Sustainable Environment) provides market and technical information aimed at increasing rural and agricultural incomes with a sustainable environment. It was designed to help identify and pursue investments in natural resource-based industries (NRBIs). A worldwide USAID initiative which promotes environmentally sound strategies for economic growth. The focus is on industries that sustainably raise incomes, are environmentally sound, and promote CBNRM

1. Africa, Sub-Saharan

General

  1. FRAME.   Description: FRAME was conceived to help give USAID a way to validate and improve the mix of programs within its overall portfolio. FRAME creates an opportunity for analysts and decision-makers to think strategically about environmental and natural resource management issues as they relate to the challenge of sustainable development in Africa. It builds an exciting dynamic that brings together people who rarely interact, catalyzing new working relationships that facilitate the exchange of information and broadening of perspectives. FRAME is designed to facilitate the increased use of up-to-date information by environment and NRM decision-makers and practitioners as they analyze issues, plan strategically, and advocate their positions. The FRAME web exists primarily to serve implementors of USAID-supported environmental initiatives in Africa. It exists as a place to share information, discuss key issues, resolve problems and find colleagues
  2. Network for Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa (NESDA).   Description: A membership organization, bringing together environmental experts, policy-makers, technical specialists, institutions and activists (at present predominantly public sector officials) from across Africa. The site includes information about activities, publications, Ecoflash (the NESDA newsletter). The site is available in English and French
  3. Office of Sustainable Development (USAID, AfrSD).   Description: "SD's development goal is to strengthen the capacity of Africans to design and implement improved development policies, programs and strategies. The basis for long-term change lies in strengthening the development institutions of a society, increasing the stock of human capital, and developing effective policies, strategies, and programs to implement the vision of its leaders. SD is well placed to have a positive impact on these institutions, human capacities, and strategies"
  4. MELISSA.   Description: The goals of MELISSA (Managing the Environment Locally in Sub-Saharan Africa) is to support and facilitate the improvement of the local environment through partnership development and knowledge management. Through this, it contributes to finding the balance between social equity, economic advancement and sustainable development to ensure improved living conditions and a better quality of life for urban, peri-urban and rural citizens. The program facilitates and supports the development of knowledge resources through the LEAP workshops and the Knowledge Expertise Resource Network (KERN) Forum. Time frame: current business plan goes to 2003. Partners: European Union, Sida, Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs Norway, The World Bank. We provide hundreds of grassroots organizations with Internet services and training, helping them to do what they do better. International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).   Description: IIED is an independent, non-profit organization that promotes sustainable patterns of development through collaborative research, policy studies, consensus building and public information. IIED supports research and information exchange on CBNRM strategies. Community Based Natural Resource Management Support Programme in Botswana (SNV-IUCN CBNRM Support Programme).   Description: Set up to disseminate knowledge regarding CBNRM implementation in Botswana. Intended to be informative for parties interested in CBNRM in Botswana, as well as a service for parties directly involved in regional activities
  2. Administrative Management Design for Community Based Wildlife Management in Zambia (ADMADE).   Description: Started in 1988 by Zambia's National Parks and Wildlife Service with assistance from WWF and USAID. Includes the ADMADE newsletter (PDF format), a section on the Nyamaluma Institute for Community Based Resource Management, and information on safari hunting.   3. CAMPFIRE.   Description: CAMPFIRE (Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources) is the internationally known CBNRM initiative in Zimbabwe. Provides "fact sheets" on the programme and descriptions of the organizations involved
  4. Directorate of Environmental Affairs (Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Namibia).   Description: The DEA was created to assist in co-ordination of environmental activities in Namibia, and play an important role in promoting CBNRM. Contains basic information about how CBNRM works in Namibia, plus publications. Link to Namibia's CBNRM Programme
  5. IUCN Botswana.   Description: The World Conservation Union - Botswana Office is involved in drafting environmental policies, strategies and legislation; formulating management plans; identifying the environmental interests and needs of the business sector; and providing support and capacity building to NGOs and CBOs in the country
  7. IUCN - Regional Office for Southern Africa (IUCN-ROSA).   Description: The World Conservation Union - Regional Office for Southern Africa (based in Harare, Zimbabwe), is the co-ordinating organization of the SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) regional Natural Resource Management Project
  8. The Lusanga Integrated Resource Development Project.   Description: Luangwa Integrated Resource and Development Project was one of the first CBNRM initiatives in Zambia. Contains a detailed description of the economic and social aspects of the project
  9. IUCN Mozambique Country Office.   Description: One of several foci is to give technical support, networks and seminar series on environmental economics, resource tenure and CBNRM
  10. Community Based Natural Resource Management.   Description: A programme of analysis and communication, by the Centre for Applied social Sciences (CASS) at the University of Zimbabwe, and the Programme for Land and Agrarian Studies (IPLAAS), at School of Government, at University of the Western Cape. Aims to build beyond the existing, mostly national activities, toward an integrated regional commitment to the CBNRM sector
  11. Institutional Reinforcement for Community Empowerment (IRCE).   Description: This project works to build the capacity of Botswana NGOs and community-based organizations (CBOs) involved in CBNRM. Through a participatory and collaborative process, NGOs identify their needs for specific capacity building assistance, which is provided through a combination of workshops, training programs and grants, thus enhancing the ability of NGOs to facilitate CBO CBNRM activities
  12. The SADC Natural Resources Management Programme (NRMP).   Description: The NRMP is one of the major projects managed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Wildlife Sector, in conjunction with the SADC Inland Fisheries and Forestry Sectors. Based in Lilongwe, Malawi, SADC is the regional process that coordinates and harmonizes the governance activities of the fourteen states in southern Africa
  13. Commons Southern Africa.   Description: A southern African CBNRM newsletter that report on, among others, policy trends, legislation, project performance, evaluations, and training opportunities. The aim is to keep those involved in CBNRM better informed about developments in the region. Published jointly by CASS at University of Zimbabwe and IPLAAS at University of the Western Cape (see link available elsewhere on the website).   14. COMPASS.   Description: Community Partnerships for Sustainable Resource Management in Malawi (COMPASS) is designed to target people and institutions engaged in CBNRM initiatives at national, district and local levels. It links to useful publications, including: a small grants manual that contains guidelines for applying for the small grants available for CBNRM initiatives, best CBNRM practices as guidelines, case studies, capacity building requirements of key organizations involved in CBNRM, training needs assessment, a critical review of the policy framework for CBNRM, and procedures for coordinating CBNRM activities.   15. Community based natural resource management in Southern Africa.   Description: Announcement of a new research and communications programme on CBNRM in southern Africa. Comments: Posted August 1999
  16. Report Back Africa.   Description: The Community Outreach Program (COP) is a unique initiative that aims to complement and promote resource conservation and community development in the Southern Africa region. It achieves this by using theatrical and other artistic techniques to develop innovative communication mechanisms. This approach combines the experience and expertise of researchers, scientists and technical experts with the culture and tradition of African theater and dance.   18. Kalahari Peoples Fund (KPF). Benefiting the People of the Kalahari and other Arid Lands.   Description: The Kalahari Peoples Fund (KPF) is a non-profit organization formed for the benefit of the San (Bushmen, Basarwa) and other rural peoples of the Kalahari desert region of southern Africa. It is composed of anthropologists, development workers, and other interested individuals who have worked closely with these peoples and are familiar with their contemporary situations
  19. Khwai Development Trust (KDT).   Description: "The Khwai community is situated in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The people of Khwai recognize this and desire to preserve these settings for future generations. They also want to enjoy many of the same comforts developed nations enjoy. Development and conservation usually conflict but in Khwai they can go hand in hand. The formation of Khwai Development Trust (KDT) in 1995 laid out the future of sustainable development in Khwai. Eco-tourism is the best prospect for the Khwai area and developing a community safari business is KDT's primary aim. This web site is devoted to presenting Khwai the village, Khwai Development Trust and the unique spirit, aspirations and culture of the Babukakhwae (river bushmen) who live in Khwai". African College for CBNRM.   Description: The College assists rural communities in Zambia to learn appropriate skills for managing natural resources, especially wildlife, and to sustain economic and material benefits. The goals and policies of the CBNRM/ADMADE program arise from threats to wildlife and other natural resources in Zambia and to rural livelihoods in areas surrounding national parks
  21. Namibian Nature Foundation (NNF).   Description: The primary is to promote sustainable development, the conservation of biological diversity and natural ecosystems, and the wise and ethical use of natural resources for the benefit of all Namibians, both present and future. At present the NNF is managing 54 main projects throughout the country and the southern African subregion. The Foundation is a major partner in the Namibian CBNRM programme, mandated by NACSO as the focal point for grant-making, fund raising, financial management/training and performance monitoring/evaluation of Conservancies.   1. Groupe de recherche et d'action sur le foncier (GRAF).   Description: A group of researchers and practitioners in Burkina Faso that work on CBNRM issues in that country. Publishes 'GRAFInfo'. Comments: see Group Periodicals
  2. Le Projet de Gestion Communautaire des Ressources Naturelles (CBNRMP).   Description: Located in Senegal. The purpose is to increase private sector incomes derived from the exploitation of natural resources, consistent with decentralized, sustainable NRM. The purpose is to increase local community participation in the identification, planning, use and conservation of natural resources. Time frame: 1994-2001.   1. South-East Consortium for International Development (SECID).   Description: SECID is a not-for-profit NGO of 20 universities and 1 research institute located in Southeastern United States. Its experience lies in the fields of sustainable agriculture, institutional development, and areas related to the conservation and management of biodiversity. It is headquartered in Washington D.C., United States, and maintains offices in Haiti, Senegal, Vietnam and the People's Republic of China. SECID operates a CBNRM project in Senegal (see this page)
  2. Community-based Management.   Description: This site is done by Renewable Resources/Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Sciences, the University of Alberta, Canada. It has a focus on the situation of aboriginal groups, and their position within the nation-state. Foci include natural resource agreements, indigenous knowledge, first nations, resource development and international wildlife trade

The Project for Information Access and Connectivity (PIAC).   Description: PIAC aims to with work with Africans on using technology to: (i) enhance communications and the ability to work with colleagues and like-minded organizations in Africa and overseas, (ii) improve access to information, and (iii) improve the dissemination of African information".
